Dmitri Shostakovich - The Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47 (1937)
Movement IV - Allegro non troppo
New York Philharmonic Orchestra (NYPO), conducted by Leonard Bernstein (1959)
Shostakovich once said that the Russian people under Stalin were not allowed to cry. But when World War Two broke out, tears were okay. So they cried openly not just for the losses inflicted by the Nazis, but for the losses inflicted by Stalin. They loved their country. They feared their government. They buried their dead, those whom they could find. Shostakovich also said, "All my symphonies are tombstones." In the third movement of the Fifth you can almost hear Tukhachevsky and all the other victims of Stalin's purges shed their tears at last. [helium]
